Dear Le Cuoreans,
I must admit that the following message I’m going to share is in a more serious tone, but this is exactly the point that we wish to bring across seriously – The importance of wearing shoes, especially kids!
According to a report established in 2011 by World Bank’s Development Research Group, over 31% of the world’s population lives on an income of less than S$2 per day. This fact indicates the inability of over 2.2 billion people to afford the basic necessities of life including food, housing, clothing, and not forgetting the shoes. In fact, within schools in the United States, nurses report that shoes and socks are in the “Top 10 Items Schools Need You to Donate” (#5 and #3, respectively). Many may never have the opportunity to own even one pair of shoes. A lack of adequate footwear is more than a simple inconvenience or lack of comfort.
Also, World Health Organization reported in 2013 that more than 1.5 billion people are infected with parasitic diseases transmitted through contaminated soil that could be prevented by wearing proper footwear. Shoes are needed and we have them. By giving them to the poorest of the poor, we can eliminate an epidemic of unnecessary death.
Le Cuore understands that shoes are one of the cheapest solutions to prevent the hardship and life-threatening symptoms caused by parasitic infection and soil transmitted helminths (STH). Being active in the shoe-making industry, we undertake the social responsibility of educating people and raising the awareness of the importance of wearing shoes. In the next couple of months, Le Cuore will be launching a new initiative that will allow ordinary people like you and me getting involved in providing shoes to the needy children in the region. By giving a little time or money, or contributing effort in a small way in preparing simple kid shoes, you will be surprised that how meaningful and impactful it can be to the lives of the children! More importantly, it gives hope to our future generations!
