The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was a century-old American children’s novel written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W.W. Denslow, originally published in Chicago on May 17, 1900. It has seen several reprints different titles, most often under the title of The Wizard of Oz, which was named after the popular Broadway musical adaptation. For the past century, it has also been adapted by various kinds of medias, such as: musical films, television, anime, movies, etc, under different names. It is declared as “America’s greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale” by the Library of Congress.
The story chronicles the adventures of a young farm girl named Dorothy in the magical Land of Oz, after she and her pet dog Toto are swept away from their Kansas home by a cyclone. In the original novel, the silver shoes are the magical shoes owned by the wicked witch of the East whom was killed when Dorothy’s house landed on her. The magical shoes can bring the wearer to anywhere in the world he wishes. Dorothy then uses the silver shoes to transport her back to her home in Kansas.
Interesting enough, Dorothy wears different types of shoes in various medias and eras, with additional powers as well. For instance, in the book named Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the shoes are made of special glass beads that look shiny and iridescent, and they are burnt red hot and turned into ruby slippers after enchanting with spell! In another musical film, The Wiz (1978), the shoes are silver high heels! Yet in another television film, The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz, the shoes are sparkling, bejewelled, glittery Manolo Blahnik high-heels! Lastly, in the Japanese version of anime film, Dorothy of Oz, she wears red boots!
