Puss in Boots – The Human Helper

Puss in Boots – The Human Helper

If you have watched the movie – Shrek 2, you must be quite impressed by one of the main characters – Puss in Boots! This cute trickster cat is characterised by wearing a swordsman’s suit, an inspiration from Zorro and Indiana Jones, and a pair of eye-catching boots! So exactly where does Puss in Boots come from?

In fact, “Puss in Boots” is the English version of an Italian and later European library fairy tale – “Master Cat, or the Booted Cat”, which can be traced to the oldest written version by Italian writer, Giovanni Francesco Straporola, between Year 1550 to 1553. It became famous when a similar storyline was written in French at the close of the seventeenth century by iconic European fairy tale writer – Charles Perrault.

The story was about a cat who uses trickery and deceit to gain power, wealth, and the hand of a princess in marriage for his penniless and low-born master. It demonstrated its loyalty to its master and did with its best abilities to help its master gaining enormous wealth and fame.

"Puss in Boots" has provided inspiration for composers, choreographers, and other artists over the centuries. It transpires the spirit of fairy stories that gives great dignity to the smallest achievements (such as befriending an animal or being befriended by an animal) and that such ordinary events may lead to great things. It encourages children to believe and trust that their small, real achievements are important although perhaps not recognized at the moment.

Interesting enough, until now no one is able to provide a convincing explanation on why Puss is wearing a pair of boots instead of other types of shoes, though some authors are trying to imagine that the boots are magical and are able to turn the cat into a man! A more likely reason is due to the background when the story was written that perhaps wearing boots was a very common practice in Europe during the 15th century.

Back to modern days right now, boots have established its own status in the shoes world and people like to keep at least a pair of it as collection or fashion. They are no longer being confined as shoes for winter or cold weather, but are flourished into many fashionable designs and patterns that are suitable for all occasions and weathers. Do you know, there is even a type of boots call the Summer Boots with open toes concept?
